To most people, birds are pretty beautiful creatures, they’re colorful and they can sing, after all. But there are some that really make you cringe. Here are 14 Of the World’s Ugliest birds that will make you think twice after looking at them.
1) Horned Screamer (Anhima cornuta)
The Horned Screamer is a large bird with a long neck, small head, and black and white plumage. It is also called the Bush Turkey or Rhea. They are native to South America and eat insects, frogs, crustaceans, small mammals and reptiles. They have a high-pitched call that sounds like mee-ee-ee-ee or kee-kee-kee.
2) Greater Rhea (Rhea americana)
The Greater Rhea is one of the ugliest birds in the world. It gets its name from its large size, and noisy cry. It lives in open plains and grasslands of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Peru, and Venezuela. Rhea can grow to be 2 feet tall and weigh as much as 40 pounds. The males have a bright red head and neck, while the females are mainly brown with white stripes on their wings.
3) Cinereous vulture (Aegypius monachus)
The cinereous vulture is sometimes called the black vulture, although it’s not actually a vulture but a member of the family Accipitridae. It is having large wingspan and is lives in Europe, Asia, and Africa. The cinereous vulture lives in dry or mountainous areas where it feeds on carrion (dead animals). This creepy bird is going in my list of 14 Of the World’s Ugliest birds.
4) Southern Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius)
The southern cassowary is an endangered species of flightless bird native to the rain forests of New Guinea. There are two subspecies, the northern cassowary and the southern cassowary. The southern cassowary is one of the most dangerous birds in the world due to its aggression towards humans and other animals. It has a powerful kick that can cause injury or death to any animal within reach.

The Sri Lanka frogmouth is present in areas that are heavily forested or near water sources with plenty of vegetation. You can find it in many different habitats. When this bird is startled it will puff up its feathers and hiss or make other noises to scare off predators.
6) Marabou Stork (Leptoptilos crumenifer)
The Marabou stork is a large bird with long red legs and a bald head, with a featherless neck. It has a white body and black wings with some white feathers on the edges. This bird’s impressive size (heights up to 1 meter) makes it one of the top ugliest birds in the world. This for me is the ugliest of all and is defiantly going in my list of 14 Of the World’s Ugliest birds.

8) Shoebill Stork (Balaeniceps rex)
The Shoebill Stork is one of the most unique looking birds on this list. It is called the shoebill because its bill resembles a shoe’s shape and the head of the stork. You can find this bird in Africa, where they are considered a rare sight. Amazingly they are able to reach up to 10 feet tall, making them one of the tallest birds too!

One of the biggest hornbill species in Asia. Helmeted Hornbill are present in Thailand, Myanmar, Sumatra, Borneo, and the Malay Peninsula. Of its 3 kilograms weight, the casque (a helmet-like structure on the head) makes up about 11%. The males engage in head-to-head fighting using their almost solid casque, which is unique among hornbills. Since 1975, it is protected under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) because of its current status which is now endangered.
13) Northern bald ibis (Geronticus eremita)
Also called as waldrapp or hermit ibis, bald ibis is an unattractive bird. Just two ibis’ populations are present as of 2004 research: those in Turkey and Morocco. Morocco is having its 99 percent of the wild population. In recent years, the ibis is reintroduced in countries like Syria. The northern bald ibis has a face devoid of feathers and a body covered in black feathers. The ibis has a dull red tint on its face and beak. The male and female ibis have different sized beaks. The northern bald ibis has feathers when it is born, but they gradually fall out over time.
14) Capuchinbird/calfbird (Perissocephalus tricolor)
One of the strangest birds in South America. The singing male Capuchin birds bows forward before abruptly stretching out to his full length and hoisting a monk-like feathered cowl over his bare, blue-gray head. Female Capuchin birds will approach the most handsome of the flaunting males. The only male to mate will be the alpha with the best singing style. These ugly fellows eat fruit under the canopy of the forest and are having one of the oddest avian sounds; it sounds like a faraway chain saw or cow.
